After a long period of discussions and uncertainty, the Wikimedia Foundation announced that they'll be migrating the Wikipedia search backend (CirrusSearch) from Elasticsearch to OpenSearch...
...and now, just a couple weeks later, Elasticsearch has announced that they're open source again under AGPL. Impeccable timing.

@kevin I wonder what the chances are that someone at #Elastic still cares about #Wikipedia. Surely this move was in preparation for a while, but why now? Probably it has something to do with yesterday's earnings report, which sent their shares down 30 %. https://ir.elastic.co/news/news-details/2024/Elastic-Reports-First-Quarter-Fiscal-2025-Financial-Results/default.aspx
@kevin Funnily, as I wrote that, the top commit on ElasticSearch is from Nik of former WMF fame. https://github.com/elastic/elasticsearch/commit/c1d9e7ead52cae78b5d9fe48d998edeece246eae
